Gutters are added to homes and commercial buildings to avoid water damage to sidings and prevent water staining on brick and stone masonry. Most importantly, well-made, functional gutter systems negate foundation problems due to erosion and prevent landscaping and turf issues as well.

All the advantages of gutters being noted, we also have to say that they frequently break if not maintained, leaving your building looking shabby or unprofessional in no time.

Gutters break due to natural wear and tear, environmental stresses, and human neglect. Other issues also influence gutter systems.

To help you maintain your home and keep your gutter systems in working order, the experts at Mike’s Roofing have listed three common issues with gutters and how to fix them.

1. Leaking gutters
The most common problem we see with both recent and older constructed homes is gutters leaking. In most cases, this is due to the failure of the gutters sealant, and usually, just a new bead (layer) of sealant will do the trick.

If you plan on handling this issue yourself, the first thing you should consider is safety. So, grab a stable ladder and carefully climb up to the area in need of attention. Next, thoroughly inspect and clean the area that needs sealant, ensuring it is completely dry. Once ready, apply a thick layer of high-quality sealant to ensure no leakages occur in the future.

2. Water working its way behind the gutter
Often water works its way behind the gutter, running down the wall and eventually ruining its finish, instead of draining correctly. The reason for this is improper flashing during construction.

To fix the problem, you need to install drip edges that guide the water from the roof into the gutter. For proper installation on a pre-existing roof, you need to slide the drip edge under all layers of the shingles and felt to the deck. Finally, you need to install screws every two feet where the drip edge and gutter connect.

3. Improper installation
Improper installation of gutter systems by inexperienced or incompetent contractors is a significant issue that is nearly impossible to rectify quickly with some sealant and screws. The thing is, unless completely pulled up and redone, the gutter is unlikely to function as expected, and this could lead to damage to your property.

In the case of poorly installed gutters, it is best to call in a professional roofing contractor. It is wise to remember that there is no quick fix when the job was never done right in the first place, and attempting DIYs or other quick fixes is a sure way to waste money and time.
